National Black Writer’s Conference This Week!

One of the most important events that happens every two years is the National Black Writers Conference. Black scholars, great thinkers, creative beings, legends, historians all gather here to give  tribute to the ones that have run the race and keeping our place in history alive, telling our stories as we see them, feel them, live them; unedited. I am always so proud and in awe to be in attendance of this wonderful gathering of great Black creative minds and talent.  Dr. Brenda Greene is one of my heroes. She is brilliant, focused, talented and committed to our history and culture.

The conference will be held at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, New York beginning this Thursday March 29th to Sunday April 1st. It is not something to be missed is all I can say to you. This year’s focus is, ‘The Impact of Migration, Popular Culture and Natural enviroment in the Literature of Black Writers.”

“Through novels, stories, poems, plays, memoirs, and essays, black writers have explored the importance of memory on our concepts of self and family. They have examined the impact of popular culture on our personal lives, belief systems, values, and traditions. And they have chronicled what happens when we neglect and do not nurture our natural environment. In essence, they have used the power of words and the literary arts to stir our imagination and to motivate us to affirm, critique, and reflect on our responses to personal, societal, and environmental issues in our lives. The Eleventh National Black Writers Conference will provide writers, scholars, literary professionals, students, and the general public with a forum for engaging in dynamic and spirited conversations, panel discussions, readings, workshops, and performances on themes related to migration, cultural memory, popular culture, and the natural environment.”
